Descrizione
The 2019 mixed-media painting "Fisherman" by Nazzarena Poli Maramotti is a remarkable illustration of the artist's skill in fusing abstraction with figuration to produce surreal and evocative environments. The artwork provides the observer with an immersive, nearly tactile perspective of her pictorial cosmos due to its quite big dimensions (100 × 140 cm). Warm, earthy hues (gold, olive green, brown, and ochre) paired with shaded grays and translucent glazes define the piece. These hues evoke forested landscapes or aquatic settings, giving the picture a cozy, organic, and engulfing feel. There is a lot of layering in the picture. More distinct and vivid objects can be seen in the front, while the picture in the background fades into a blurry evanescence. Castings and transparencies that add depth and the appearance of movement are used to create this fading effect. A rich and colorful surface is produced by overlapping several materials and processes. Denser, more opaque strokes create the ground and more substantial masses, while vertical color drips suggest the flow of water or reflected trees.
The spectator is led to recognize a figure on the right side of the composition by the title, "Fisherman." This is portrayed lightly, almost imperceptibly, as though it were merging with its surroundings. The evanescence of the figure implies harmony between nature and humanity.
The symbiotic interaction between humans and the natural environment appears to be explored in this book. An iconic figure, the fisherman may symbolize a return to a prehistoric realm where people are attentive to and in sync with the cycles of the natural world.
The natural setting and the fisherman's subdued presence create an atmosphere of contemplative seclusion, as though the main character were deep in thought.
A contemplation of time and the incorporation of the individual into natural history is suggested by the merging of the human form with the surrounding landscape. The concept of a layered recollection is evoked by the use of mixed media, with its layers and transparencies.
The piece evokes the Romantic idea of the sublime, when nature dominates and looms over the individual, arousing strong and frequently conflicting feelings (both curiosity and unease).
Despite not being explicitly narrative, the piece has a symbolic element in which the fisherman serves as a universal metaphor for the pursuit, anticipation, and attachment to something bigger.
Though filtered through a modern aesthetic, the usage of green and golden tones, as well as the interaction of light and shadow, could evoke the moods of Nordic or Symbolist settings.
The piece's ethereal and ethereal ambiance captivates the observer. The scenery appears dynamic and alive, as though it were breathing. The fisherman's subdued presence heightens the feeling of quiet and reflection, beckoning the observer to pause, enter the setting, and think.
Nazzarena Poli Maramotti's "Fisherman" oscillates between substance and spirit, between figuration and abstraction. The artist successfully conveys a sense of reflection and harmony with the natural scene through the deft use of mixed media and a flowing composition. A meditative reading is encouraged by this artwork, which allows for a variety of interpretations regarding the ancestry of the relationship between humans and nature.
