invitation to the artist's exhibition in 2002 at the contemporary fine art gallery in Berlin. "In her third third solo exhibition with Contemporary Fine Arts, SARAH LUCAS dedicates her works to the British football player Charlie George, who reached the pinnacle of his career with the London club Arsenal in the seventies. Lucas’ engagement with the figure of Charlie George is variously motivated. The artist grew up on the same block as George. Additionally, Lucas is interested in Charlie George as an emblematic figure for success, for somebody who “made it”. She presents the viewer with a clichéd and hackneyed dream – that of a boy of humble origins who made it to the top through iron discipline and training, and who was subsequently celebrated as a media star. Another line of investigation is the culture of football and fandom; phenomena that have been long exerted a fascination on Sarah Lucas, not least on account of their social and communal qualities. In addition, the illustrative aesthetics associated with this scene have informed and influenced many of the artist's previous works. The presentation, Lucas’ first gallery exhibition in three years, is at the same time a very personal consideration of her own adolescent socialisation in the seventies." - Contemporary Fine art gallery
